Episode Eight: More Mid-Year Top Tens; The Fine Art of Record Buying; New Reviews
The Stage Banter team reads listener mid-year top tens and follows up with a few more cuts from their own lists (see Episode Six for full coverage). We discuss the fine, lost art of record buying and detour into Greg's shady past as an illegal downloader. He escaped the RIAA and now tells his crime-ridden tale to high school students nationwide. Finally, we review new releases by Sonic Youth and Tim Easton, as well as a great record by Arizona Amp and Alternator that came out late last year. This episode of Stage Banter is super-sized for your listening enjoyment.

For those interested in Ricky Gervais and his presence on my top ten list…
Ricky is an English comedian who was the creator of The Office series; the US version airs on NBC, and is currently hard at work on season two of the Extras series that airs on HBO.
Ricky hosts the “worlds number one podcast” with The Ricky Gervais Show, which is one of the funniest spoken word podcasts anywhere.

After repeated listens, I can't get behind Sean's recommendation of The Grates. I suggest you sample it on iTunes before purchase.

MK

get on the wagon now - they are bound for big things and they will appear on many best of 2006 lists ... im not even joking
Top ten lists? So will Tropicalia and Tom Zé, doesn't mean I can get behind them.
Since when did the Ess Dog start caring about magazine lists?
did i mention magazines???
no
they will appear on many best 0f 2006 lists ... the lists of those that enjoy fantastic music
(although - if anyone reading loves magazine lists and loves being slightly ahead of the curve - this is my public service announcement - get it now - its gonna be good no matter when - but you should always jump at the chance to hear great music)
And the discussion becomes about semantics!
Either way -- you love "best of" lists (personal, published, or theorized) that you agree with, and lament those you don't.
i dont know that id say that i love em ... i mean im not gonna marry em or anything ... i just wanna counter yer counter that they arent worth salivating over ... thats just the ep - imagine what the albums gonna be like?
stupendous!!!
semantics is what got me where i am!
I will need to regurgitate #8 a couple times to weigh in on other matters, but I have long irritated friends with my hatred of jewel cases. These cases are the worst media packaging invention EVER. After 20 years, you'd think someone would notice that this idea sucks. Some labels/artists are finally figuring out the novel concept of slipping the disc between two layers of cardboard, like LP's. BRILLIANT!
The Grates is the kind of music I love being cranked out over the PA at clubs between band sets, and you think, "Wow...who is that??"
I admit, the track that Sean played is the good song on the album. It's just a pity the other three don't stack up, which is why I recommend you sample it before you buy it. But now we're back to square one.
I'm done with this!
true - the others might not be as frantic - but i think they work - just in a different way ... i think thats another reason why i like em - the diversity of the song structures
its without a doubt the first female fronted project ive heard since rilo kiley that ive given the time of day and thats why im so jazzed to see other people get into it
i wont allow anyone to stand in my way!!!
(cue dramatic lighting and sound)
"Via via, via via London England!!!!"
you give it two banters???
thats pretty good for only liking one outta four tracks
ill take it!!!
I like the lyrics to the first song. Multiply this album x4 and it equals the Sonic Youth full-length.
Is that Joe Strummer on MK's rating sound clip? What are the other two annoying clips?
i offer up this:
lets go halfsies on the import full length and ill let you listen to it on monday wednesday and friday
i get tuesday thursday and saturday
sundays we alternate
deal???
matt = the boss
greg = david ryan adams
sean = john michael stipe
Thanks in part to an earlier show, I am digging into Mark Eitzel. There is a link on his web site to a free download of AMC's Everclear, which relates to this show. There is a bounty of guilt-free mp3 downloads out there, as I'm sure ya'll know.
So weird that Sean likes The Grates but hates Sonic Youth...
Where is all my Strokes-related hate mail?
New TV On the Radio supposedly comes out August 1st, hard to find confirmation. Or, you can get the import for $26? on Amazon.
Props to Matt for dropping a David Lowery. He "bantered" with a heckler several years ago at Piere's and it was priceless. Love the guy. He does a podcast and started a recent one with two A. C. Newman solo tracks that were killer. Caught me off guard.
The Strokes are a band that I refuse to not support.
I'm also eager for something new by their southern brothers, KOL.
Ok, I'm done for the week (maybe).
thats ok - were playing the country connection
I finally heard The Grates EP...
A total rip off of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs first EP. Shameless even.
BUT...it's pretty good regardless and I totally see why Sean would recommend it so freely.
R.M. The Strokes would love your use of a double negative. I've actually recieved two e-mail from people telling me how much they love the new album. It's an A-
