Episode 14 & a Half: Stage Banter Radio
The Stage Banter boys all found themselves deeply saddened that personal affairs (i.e. the new Elton John record - Rakim live on stage - making a sandwich) would prohibit them from creating the next episode of 'the Banter'. So they called upon an old friend, DJ Tanner, to spin some tunes and entertain ya in their absence. There's everything from Ska to Folk to Hip Hop to Rock n Roll and so much more in this first edition of Stage Banter Radio. Enjoy!

Has anyone heard this episode yet? Sean picked an AWESOME song ... see if you can guess which one I'm talking about.
Damn good show. Best radio station in Fort Wayne, but that's not saying much.
I loved the Wrens tune (vocals reminded me of Britt Daniel), and the sweet voice of Tom Waits on HIS song.
Nothing against the banter, but that was a sweet selection of tunes. I envy your neighbors.
RIP Smoky.
I walked into Smoky's record shop on Wells Street last summer with the sole purpose of being able to then say I met the old guy. Plus, it's the only record store around where I might possibly be considered a youngster by the person across the counter. He was 83; I was 51. I grabbed an un-priced copy of Led Zeppelin's debut, handed it to him for appraisement, and was delighted at his focus on the matter. It was obvious he had spent more than a few years staring at LP covers. That was an encounter I suspect he soon forgot, but I never will.
(I got the Led Zeppelin for $2)
I know this has nothing to do with Ep. 14, but I was compelled to honor Smoky somewhere.
HIS song ... thanks for stressing that. I hate the Philadelphia Eagles.
So who do you all think picked what?
Thanks to the SB folks for inspiring (Ep. 5, 11) my road trip to Kalamazoo to get my Elephant 6 on.
Elf Power played a great set at Kraftbrau, ending with John Lennon's "The Ballad of John and Yoko." (there were around 20 people in the crowd by the end of the show)
for Sean: Andrew Rieger wore his Roky Erickson shirt.
so how did it end up going down ... ticket in advance or at the door?
what other venue would you compare it to size wise?
good lookin out on the shirt ... i walked with a zombie last night
Just went. With only about 50 people there, it was hardly an issue.(Kraftbrau show).
My guess is 200-300 capacity.
It's a very cool converted old brick rectangle of a building downtown with easy parking.
Craftbrewed beer, many styles.
Rootbeer also made on premises.
Free popcorn (didn't see any other food).
Small patio.
NO TVs...Yea!!!
I will definitely return.
Sounds very cool. Anyone know if there are any good Firehouse shows in the near future?
Also, Jeremy Gerardot from Sketch Machine kinda challeneged me ... he made a list of his 50 favorite albums ever (ranked!!) and asked me to do the same. "Impossible," I say, but still, I'm compelled to try.
Sean, Matt, R. Mike, Jen, etc. Do any of you have any interest in this? Sounds daunting, but fun.
With extreme, yet agonizing, pleasure. When is the deadline?
You: Tomorrow night
Me: Wednesday
Sean: 2026
(I'm pretty sure Sean isn't a fan of ratings and rankings ... I think it's fun when not taken too seriously.)
other than the lyrics to 'smooth' ... thats the silliest thing ive ever heard
if you are serious, i think i'm up to the challenge. are there any rules such as no doubles from the same artist? it seems these things are typically conditional. is there a deadline...seriously?
also, props to sean for a great show. the wrens are fantastic...they don't tour much but will be in the area early next month at little bros. in columbus. wendy and i are going...y'all are beyond welcome to join.
oh, lastly, greg, i guess TVZ was your fave. i bet you liked the YLT too.
RIP smokey...indeed.
does anyone know what's gonna happen to that place?
my sadness, as of yesterday, is compounded...i just found out that one of my fave record stores anywhere, the hi-fi shop in fairmount, is closing as well. that place is a beautiful timewarp...black and white checker floors with plastic nipper standing guard at the door. promo posters and vintage UNOPENED stuff everywhere. the owners are retiring, the stock will be liquidated, and i will cry as i did yesterday when i left...that was only after spending about $250, knowing it was my last chance. i started shopping there as a young beatles freak around age 10. that's a long time ago, friends. so started my love of vinyl hunting and the beginning of a horrible spending habit. i knew this day was coming, but i didn't know it would come so soon.
so, i guess, RIP hi-fi shop and a bit of my childhood as well.
songs I picked: YLT/Chilton, Wrens, Waits, TVZ, Buck65 ... and 2 more.
Rules:
-Double up with artists all you want
-No Hits albums
... that's it. R. Mike is due tonight, Jen, you're due on Wed. with me. Everyone else is due by friday.
Or, do it whenever you feel like it. I'll post Jeremy's later on tonight, it's pretty honest/cool.
A few disclaimers before I get this out of my head and hands...
The Rolling Stones' Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) would easily be in my top five. I remember the day I bought it, where I played it, etc. I stared at that gatefold cover and booklet for days. But, rules are rules.
I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought, partly due to the fact that most of these records are common top 50 records. The next 50 would probably be more interesting (but more difficult to pick). There are many artists I really love that aren't on this list. I hated that.
I know that I have loved every one of these records for a very long time. The order became too difficult, and I gave up trying to reshuffle after a while. For that reason, I left numbers off (hope there's 50)...

(And you stuck to my deadline. Hilarious.)
Hey all.
Back from Nashvegas. To paraphrase a friend of mine, I love that fuckin' city, and I think that fuckin' city loves me.
But I digress.
Finally got to listen to 14.5 tonight and if the RIAA hadn't already locked up DJ Tanner, I'd give him a big ol' hug. We need to take the night off for obscure music conferences and has-been rappers more often.
Also -- my mom used to take me to Smoky's once a week about 25 years ago. She'd buy the latest Kenny Rogers 45, I'd stare with wonder at the bearded man behind the register.
Also 2 -- Kraftbrau -- probably my favorite venue within 2.5 hours. Kalamazoo is a surprisingly hip city, if any of y'all didn't already know that (though I'm sure you do).
Also 3 -- nice work on the LIST, R. Mike. It's a stunning undertaking, particularly to put the number by the album, which you deftly avoided, and I will too. If I flip back the clock 10 years, I'd feel and say the same things about Pulp as I would yesterday about the Avett Brothers (ie, "The new album is brilliant, but the last one was the diamond!")... But I haven't listened to Pulp in five years...will I listen to the Avetts in five more?
Sometimes I used to go to parties --
MK
Yea, Matt, that was the disappointing result of the list. My favorite records are usually some that I've just purchased. That's why I still buy so many. Otherwise, I could just play those 50 (or less) over and over.
One too many Young Dudes = 51

DISCLAIMER:
This is like walking around Soldier Field nude. That is a great list, Jen.
Muswell is a jewel.
I am still kicking myself for leaving GP and Elliott Smith off my 50. Never again. Next time I'll drop a couple Young Dudes.
greg:
please pay special attention to #37 on jen's list. now, go ask your girlfriend if you can borrow it and tell her you're sorry for ever doubting her opinion.
Jen ... I like your list more than mine. Very well done. Now we just need the MK master list and something from either of the Smith boys ... hopefully both. Probably neither.
"Carly" ... I used to listen to Beulah all the time. You know that. I've even seen them live. :)
This post has been removed by the author.
yay, carly! another beulah fan in town! you've seen "a good band is easy to kill" probably, but if not, i think a movie night might be in order...everyone should see that and 'dig' if for no other reason than to see how the average joe band makes and breaks on the road.
rmike: sorry, dude. i have been redundant all day! i see you corrected your own mott double. did you hear that tweedy supposedly did some stuff with mr. mott himself? i got that from an insider source that heard it straight from jeff...
sara and jeremy: stellar lists as well.
in carly's defense, greg, you only saw beulah because they opened for wilco. still, glad to know that you like them. i thought you did...you mentioned them on the e6 episode, right? i love 'when your heartstrings break' as well, but it's not as strong album-wise.
i figured beulah would be one i'd get dogged for.

this is the u of nebraska student newspaper site. they reviewed the best and worst covers ever.
anyone up for another challenge? i can't call it, boys, so it's up to you if you want to start something...
if you copy and paste that link in a new window, it'll work.
it doesn't look like it, but it will.
Best covers is a good challenge, but please...not 50!
ok...mike, if no one else wants to do it, i would love to, but let's wait and see if the SB boys want to start something formally first.
if not, we take it underground!
I actually prefer "favorite" to "best". Like the previous list.
We'll give the others a day or so to get it started.
I'm all for the favorite cover topic ... yes.
This is the hardest thing I've ever done, other than watch my wife give birth to our two beautiful children, both of which will hopefully love these albums.
Thanks for the idea, Jeremy.
I went no greatest hits, max 3 per artist, no compilations, no bootlegs, and other than one Unplugged that made me fall in love with a man named Bucky Baxter, no live albums.

Seems like there should be more Dylan and Springsteen. I'm not so sure about that "max of 3 per" rule :)
Very cool, I guess I'll have to order MONO asap.
Now let's just hope there's a Smith willing to throw us a bone.
I've got another friends that's gonna do a list, anyone else know someone that would be into this?
ok, matt. your list is much more interesting than mine. i like your three album rule. now, i have to go back and see if i broke that.
i was shocked to see 'gold' up so high on the list, seeing that you made the comment that it was flawed on the double album SB episode. (that was you, right?)
funny story: wendy and i were in wooden nickel on NA tonight, and we were flipping through CD's...came upon a CD. wendy said, "oh, grandaddy!" i then noticed that it was not grandaddy but grandpaboy, a group i'd never heard of until tonight. now, you call it your #1? looks like i have some friday night recreational research to do!
totally unrelated: greg, what are our ground rules for our covers lists? i don't know about everyone else, but i'll need at least a week (maybe two, even) to let that one sit.
greg, i'm gonna get wendy in on this...deadline for her?
I hear a man named Jason Roemer is gonna chime in with his top 50.
I started with a list of 100. Of note, even with a hundred albums, The Beatles and Radiohead never showed up.
My criteria was simply -- if I got locked up, or put on the proverbial desert island, what 50 albums would I take with me that would remind me of my life? There are a surprising number of albums on here that I haven't spun in 3, 4, 5 years, but they certainly spoke to me at some point.
Strangers Almanac was 51.
If I allowed bootlegs, then Bruce and Bob boots would occupy at least 6 of the top 10 spots.
I had to limit it to three max, otherwise the whole list would have been Bruce, Bob, Paul, Jeff, Tim, Lloyd, Marah and Ryan.
Gold gets the nod -- I love imperfect things -- because it perfectly reminds me of a season or two of my life. There are definitely better Ryan Adams or Whiskeytown records, but that's my favorite.
So what's the BEST album ever made?
Born to Run.
Perfect distillation of the magic and magesty, the catharsis and passion, the poetry and soul of rock n roll.
Well, to me anyway.
ah, yes, matt. westerberg. gotcha.
didn't know anything about grandpaboy before tonight. just like my grandpa (ha) said all the time, "you learn something new everyday, jeni."
too true, dearest grampy.
Matt,
I used to claim that Beatles lovers/non-lovers was my first division of society. I'll make an exception for you. At least you noted that omitting them was significant. Your criteria was exactly what it should be. Nice job.
Semi-related: Did you enjoy Chris Mars' first solo ( Horseshoes and Hand Grenades)?
Can't wait to see Wendy and Jason's top 50. Tell Wendy that her deadline is Sunday. (But make sure she knows that I only give deadlines because I think it's funny. There are no deadlines in rock n' roll. Just ask Zach De La Rocha.)
I think a good friend of mine will do a list as well, which will be awesome. And Carly.

50. PJ Harvey – Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea
Disclaimer: The above list is Greg's estimation of what Carly's top 50 would be. It is "Carly's unauthorized top 50," if you will. I am not really good at the whole ranking thing. It is too hard and I don't have enough music to make a well rounded list, but he wanted to post one for me anyway.
For the record, she did edit it quite a bit. So as it stands, it's pretty accurate, although probably 10% wishful thinking on my part.
"I like HEARTBREAKER a lot more than GRACE." - Carly.
Good job, Carly.
i agree, carly. while i've known 'grace' longer, i LOVE 'heartbreaker' with every ounce of my soul.
btw, greg, wendy and i worked on her list last night. we'll try to finish it in the car on the way to see the strokes tomorrow night!
I really wish I was going to that Strokes show ... I love that band. Look for R. Mike.
Can't wait for Wendy's list! My friend Jason will probably be up soon. I'm tempted to take all these lists and come up with a Accumulative Top 50. But only because I love numbers. And albums.
But really, if I did that, we would all be assigned a few albums to write a paragraph or so about ... then, maybe do a show about it?
Big ideas at 3 a.m. when I should be working ... or sleeping.
Eagerly awaiting the covers list kick-off.
I'm gonna mostly stay out of the best album covers discussion, BUT -- I will say that Chris Thile's two most recent albums are AMAZINGLY beautiful. The music's not bad, either, but I go from 3 banters each to 4 or 5 just because the album artwork makes me like them that much more.
I long to do work that good.
