Episode 16: The Life & Times of mewithoutYou, news, reader mail

We move this little song & dance routine to downtown Fort Wayne and broadcast from the One Lucky Guitar office. We only sound drunk, really. It's giddiness, 100 proof no less. Anyway, we catch up on our travels around the Midwest chasing incredible music, and then get into the details and journey of Sean's favorite band, mewithoutYou, who released their long-awaited and critically adored new album Brother, Sister on September 26.

Definitely worth watching mewithoutYou live footage and a short Aaron Weiss interview on You Tube.

Also, thanks for the Sebadoh alert.

J. Robbins rocked Piere's with Jawbox once apon a time.

Love the sirens. Sounds like home.

What the hell happened to the Left Lane Cruiser FWR Presents Live on Stage episode???

the rumor is satan said wtf and has released cobains rotted soul from hell long enough to reform the n band with kris and dave ... yippee!

---------------------------------

The reformed Stooges have begun working on their new album with Nirvana producer Steve Albini.

The band are working at Albini's Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago.

It will be the group's first album of new material since 1973's 'Raw Power'.

The line up will consist of Iggy Pop, bassist Mike Watt, drummer Scott Asheton and guitarist Ron Asheton.

According to Billboard, new tracks expected to appear on the as yet untitled album include 'Mexican Guy', 'Trollin', 'Greedy Awful People', 'Claustrophobia' 'ATM', 'O Solo Mio','She Took My Money' 'End Of Christianity' and 'I'm Fried'.

The Raconteurs' Brendon Benson is believed to be making a guest appearance.

Pop said of writing with original member Ron Asheton: "All the same passions and problems are there. But the problems are in a more muted style. I'm still the show-off in the group that gets all the attention. Everyone has their role. It's pretty much the way it was in high school."

A release date for the album is yet to be announced.

...BUZZER...

The only Sebadoh lineup that can be called "classic" is Eric, Jason, and Lou. Barlow says this lineup will tour next spring.

Eric Gaffney (drums) left before the band made Bakesale, another record that should have been on my pathetic 50 list.

nice + blue

you were a song that i couldnt sing
you were a story i couldnt tell
ive only ever loved myself
but ive loved myself so well
and how defeated i return!
(yer nice + blue yer nice + blue)
i missed what i was supposed to learn
cause all i learned about was missing you

a life left half behind
though no longer blind
i cant yet see
im not the boy that i once was
but im not the man ill be
ive been waiting now
for six years on
(and have only just begun)
for the day youll hold her in your arms
oh risen lord my precious one

i was once the wine + you the wineglass
i was once alive when you held me
G-d became the glass
all things left were emptiness
oh my little girl if you look out
and see a trace of dark red
that used to be my face
in the clarity of his grace: remember me

nice + blue pt II

you were a song i couldnt sing
caught like a bear by the bees with its hand in the hive
who complains of the pain of the sting
when im lucky i got out alive!
a life at best left half behind
the taste of the honey still sweet on my tongue
and id run (lord knows ive tried)
but theres no place on earth
i can hide from the wrong ive done

then i saw a mountain and i saw a city
steadily sinking but suspiciously calm
it wasnt an end it wasnt a beginning
but a ceaseless stumbling on
there strapped like a watch on my wrist
thats finished with gold but cant tell the time
was all or what little pleasure exists
seductively sold and uselessly mine

our horse was fast and first from the gate
with the lead of a length at the sound of the gun
and the last of our cash laid down to fate (at 17 to 1)
but by the final stretch in the rear of the pack
that nag limping bad in the back
we reluctantly gave all the money wed saved
1/5 to the commonwealth and the rest to the track
then i saw a forest grow in the city
and a driftwood wall of birdhouse gourds
and im still waiting to meet a girl like my mom
but closer to my age
the true light of my eyes is a pearl
equally emptied to equally shine
and all or what little joy in the world
seemed suddenly simple and endlessly mine

i was once the wine and you were the wineglass
i was once alive when you held me
but G-d became the glass
all things left are emptiness
but oh yer just a little girl
if you look out and see a trace
of a dark red that was once my face
in the clarity of such grace:
forget all about me

As I explained to Sean this evening, I wasn't saying his precious "meh"withoutyou was Christian rock. I was saying Christian rock in general can be seen as lame fantasy/adventure music. Which just opens up a huge can of non-musical worms that are not meant for this forum.

Although, the reason that I, personally, write off Christian rock bands is that they all say the same damned thing...over and over and over. Tooth and Nail cannot be respected in my house.

The TV show rocks, nice interview... but there seems to be an abundance of hosts.

sean said...

thanks ... it had been so long since taping that episode it was completely new to me - even i was intrigued

from what vince told me last night - dean and daisy (who will show up in the next episode) will more or less serve as the hosts - fatima will do some teases and the music news - and i will continue to do the interviews and pop up at the end to endorse shows and give my overall opinion of that particular show

by the time we get to the definitely gary show - i think everything will be on track

John E. Sox-Smith said...

Sean - will you have a dvd of this episode for me to check out?

... Can we all agree to get past the killers and christians?

(And for the record, I probably wouldn't have ever considered MwY to be a Christian band had Sean not said something. Also, Brother Sister will be ZS's album of the year after 3 spins.)

Most Christians are good people, and some are great musicians. When they feel they need to separate themselves from us [sinners] is where I get turned off. My only clue to mwY was (also) sean's reference to their label being sometimes regarded as a Christian label. That said, I like them (mwY).

now "past" it.

To Greg,

I will not listen to it if it is on Tooth and Nail. Would I like to see them live, sure, but I will not support that label. In fact, next time they are around, we'll all go.

To Sean,

When I listened to the show I caught a Norma Jean reference, ugh. I thought you had standards, brotha?

I don't subsribe to what Tooth and Nail represents and I will not support them because of that.

Even uttering the name Norma Jean makes my skin crawl.

Detroit = Not close enough for this guy.

12:24 AM
John E. Sox-Smith said...

Detroit is an easy, short drive.

Cincy, St. Louis, Nashville, Cleveland, Bloomington ... those are all a bit too far, but Detroit ain't bad at all.

We'll have to consult Jen for this, she's the road expert.

sean said...

what do they represent?

what does metal blade represent?

arista?

jive?

who do you subscribe to?

labels that take money in the name of buddha - satan - shiva?

would you rather drive to chicago or cleveland?

if they wont play midcity or cstreet will you never see them live?

12:41 AM
Zachra said...

I won't support a Christian label, I think I've made that abundantly clear.

I'd rather drive to Cincy or Cleveland or Chicago. I have no use for Detroit, I've been there and I don't much care for it.

John E. Sox-Smith said...

As long as we agree that Detroit is closer than Cincy, Chicago, Cleveland, etc., I can go to sleep.

sean said...

zach-

not since troy kudza has anyone tested my friendship so strongly

im literally running up the walls here (ask greg - hell confirm)

its a shame that you wont support a great band on a label that may or may not be run by christians

its even more strange that you would support a mormon band that is signed to a label that may or may not be run by satanists

its tremendously strange that you are going out of yer way to choose a city stop that is much more out of the way than detroit

we are not choosing a new place to live or even a vacation spot

we will arrive in the city - wait in line - get inside (away from the city) - see a show and then leave for home

the venue is tremendous - greg is in total agreement

im lucky i still have hair after all ive pulled out this late evening

hugs
-sean

1:13 AM
sean said...

now yer just being mean

first of all - cincy isnt even a choice

16th - chicago

17th - detroit

18th - cleveland

if ya dont wanna go - thats one thing

if you made the comment in passing and now feel obligated to go when you dont really wanna - just say so and we can all remain friends ... no problem

but to sit here and say cincy is closer than detroit (i can get there in two hrs - less if i dont care about cops) is just a clear way of trying to be mean

1:17 AM
sean said...

mapquest puts cleveland four hrs away

mapquest puts detroit three hrs away

ill drive

we can get to motown in two hrs

1:27 AM
Zachra said...

"May or may not", wow. I won't support that label, made a vow to myself six years ago and have stood by it ever since. I try not to support many Christian products or establishments because I see the money going to fund ignorance and hatred.

I was contesting that Cincy is closer, it feels that way when I make the drive. I had no clue, or really care for that matter, that it wasn't a tour stop. Geesh.

Faded, nice.

I pick the Saturday. And only because I have a mandatory attendance class on Friday nights or I'd pick Motown.

Greg, Bob is actually very much against religion. It makes everything a bit weirder when you learn that tid-bit, think about it.

2:08 AM
Matt Kelley said...

Ah, hell, this is hilarious. Count me OUT but I can't wait to hear the show reports.

I will chime in and say: Zach, Detroit is like George Michael -- maybe, just one more try.

It truly is a GREAT town to see a show in: there's the Majestic, the Magic Stick right above, the Magic Bag, St. Andrews (which the very mention of sends chills down Greg's spine!), and even the bigger venues like Cobo and the Fox are enjoyable and quite solid for those kinds of venues.

Detroit at night is like a scene out of Robocop!! They've done a lot in the last few years to improve the place, but I remember driving in on a Friday night for a Pulp show at St. Andrews (driving my ex-wife's Nissan, no less), this show started at 7PM due to the curfews, and Detroit looked like Fort Wayne on a Sunday afternoon -- DEAD. I was quite stunned.

Cleveland Rock City is a nice place to see a show, too. Go early and stroll the Rock Hall. If the show is downtown, you'll find that Cleveland also is DEAD on the weekends.

And yeah, I say "F the Windy City"...

3:50 AM
R. Michael said...

Can you guys just read this after-banter on air for the next show?

I want to hear Greg's St. Andrew's Hall issue. I went there once and will never forget it. Lost my car.

and now for something completely different:

Ryan Adams has explained the streaming of various tracks on ryanadams.com

As previously reported by NME.COM, Adams streamed a dozen thrashy songs - recalling his band The Finger - and the rap 'Look Who's Got A Website'.

A posting on his site also claims that the songs by his metal project Werewolph are too scary to release.

Explaining the songs, Adams posted: "It's just stuff I do in my spare time, under the name The Shit. It's probably various tunes, as its been an ongoing project since I can remember. I record some punk stuff when I get bored, cause I like to play music when I'm not busy playing music.

"My other metal project is called Werewolph, but its too scary to release as it is so metal and scary that people actually turn to ice when I play it for them. Those few unlucky souls now haunt the offices of the NME instructed by my witchmaster.

"Anyway, The Shit (which is me on everything except drums which is sometimes Brad - sometimes JT) have made five albums.
1.'Is This Shit'
2.'Hits The Fans'
3.'General Ulysses S Hospitol'
4.'HillybillyJoel' (which is with the Cardinals and called CardinalShits)
5. 'slef-protrait'

"So there. And Brad and I are working on garageband wars right now. I have an alternative death metal country band called WILCOVEN. Its pretty sick."

7:57 AM
Carly said...

This really has nothing to do with the above topics. I just wanted to say that I was sitting to Greg's left at the Wilco show that he reviewed on Stage Banter, and I saw a totally different show. I loved it! I can understand his opinion, considering he has seen them several more times than I have. But, I thought it was great and just wanted to give my input.
